We are a shelter. We take in animals that have nowhere else to go. Yes, some of our animals are not purebred, some are not young and pretty, and some are not nice. But they are treated with kindness and love. Our animals live in chain link cages with concrete floors. We don't have the flea, tick and internal parasite problems other facilities fight. They are roomy enclosures. Our animals have daily human contact, a pat on the head or scratch behind the ear or a hug.
We do find homes for some of the animals. A zoo Pioneer Park in Zolfo Springs, We have given them otters, bears, bobcats, and numerous other animals. We've also helped them move the animals into their new enclosures. Natures classroom of Hillsborough County School System, they received some of our bears and we have helped with the transport of their panthers. And also some of the other educational facilities.
It is everyone's right to posses, love and take care of exotic animals, all we ask is to know what you are getting into. DO YOUR RESEARCH. The animal you choose can be your responsibility for 20 or more years depending on species. Don't let your mother, father, husband, wife, brother, sister or child get ANY animal without learning the needs of the pet. That goes from the normal cat, dog, guinea pig, hamster, mouse, bird and any pet in that category to the exotic side.
Animals are our responsibility. Everyone's responsibility. We are a throw away society. If it doesn't fit our lifestyle anymore we give it away or just let it go. Just about everyday we go to catch an iguana, a bird or a snake. Just look around you. Look at the quaker parrots that are loose, some of them started out as pets people bought. Then they found out some bit. So instead of finding a proper home for them they let them go . They colonized and cause damage to citrus crops and power outages caused by the nest they build on the power poles. There are cats and dogs thrown away because they are no longer the young cute creature that they once were. Now the feral cat population is out hurting and maiming our natural wildlife. And because we think they need to be outside to be good cats our coyote's have to pay for it. Raccoons get blamed for a lot of property damage, when it could be your neighbor letting his dog out at night and getting into garbage cans.
When can we, as so called humane beings, going to learn to live and adapt to the natural creatures around us. We get phone calls about sightings of our Florida Panther and instead of feeling lucky to see such a gorgeous creature they want to get rid of it. It was in their back yard and it might hurt their pet.
You see we not only shelter big cats. We have alligators, crocodiles, iguanas, snakes, birds, monkeys, turtles, Miniature horses, 3 legged cow, goats. Our place is called home by many.
If you think you want an animal please do your research. Our pets can be the best things or they can be nightmares. It all depends on how much time you are willing to invest in that friendship. |
